What is a stream clip, and how do clips get shared?
A clip is a short piece of a stream that viewers can create and share. Here is how Twitch clips are made, who controls sharing, and why a clip is not the whole stream.

If you follow streamers, you have probably watched a clip without knowing it: a short, shareable video of one moment from a longer broadcast. This guide covers what a clip is, how it gets made and how it travels. The details below come from Twitch's own help pages and blog, plus several how-to guides.
What it is
According to the guide site StreamerShare, a Twitch clip is "a short video segment captured from a live stream or VOD (Video on Demand)." A VOD is a saved recording of a past broadcast, so you can clip a moment live or from a replay.
The computer help site Computer Hope says the Clips feature captures between 5 and 60 of the most recent seconds of a stream. Twitch's help center says you can adjust the clip's length, up to 60 seconds, with a slider under the video player.
How a clip gets made
On desktop, the guide site StreamLadder says to hover over the video player and click the Clip button. It also lists keyboard shortcuts: ALT + X on Windows or Option + X on Mac. Twitch's help page says Twitch then captures the moment and generates a clip automatically.
On mobile, Twitch changed the process in 2024. In an Aug. 28, 2024 blog post, Twitch said the person creating a clip now has to hit "Publish" and give it a title before it saves. The company said this is so clips are created on purpose, and it gave a reason: "76% of Clips created are created by accident." The same post says streamers can set a portrait layout preference once, and Twitch will use it for future clips that the streamer or their viewers create.
That last detail answers who can make a clip: Twitch's post refers to clips made by the streamer or by their viewers, not only by the channel owner.
How clips get shared
The tech site Groovy Post says that when a clip is created, Twitch makes it publicly available for others to view, and it appears in the Clips area of the channel's page.
From there, sharing is built in. Twitch's help page says that selecting the Share button next to a clip opens a menu of all the ways to share it.
Streamers have some say over this. Twitch's help page says streamers control whether a clip can be exported directly to social media accounts, or whether they want to share it to their stories. That page does not spell out every setting, so check Twitch's help center for the current options.
What to watch out for
A clip is a short slice of a longer broadcast, up to 60 seconds according to Twitch's help center. It shows what happened in that window, not what came before or after. When a clip is passed around with a caption claiming to explain it, look for the full stream or replay before drawing conclusions. A clip's view count also measures how often the clip was watched. It says nothing about how many people were watching the live stream.
Because the sources describe Twitch's system, other platforms may use different limits and settings. The sources provided do not cover them.
Why it matters
Clips are a way for a streamer's moments to reach people who never watched live. Knowing that viewers can make them, that Twitch makes them publicly available, and that streamers can limit direct export helps you read what you see online with context.
