The Smashing Pumpkins have dropped "Black Stars," their contribution to the soundtrack for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, and a music video came with it on Friday, Oct. 16, per Just Jared and Deadline.
The video contains purple smoke. Deadline notes that it corresponds to the purple and yellow smoke filling the arena in the film's trailers.
Where the song came from
A press release, as quoted by Just Jared, says the track goes back to a time when Billy Corgan was working on a solo album and the band got an invitation to write an original song for the film.
Corgan brought in producer Butch Vig, who helped choose the song that "best complemented the world of The Hunger Games," per Just Jared. Just Jared reports it is the band's first time working with Vig since their 1993 album Siamese Dream.
The track was recorded at Chaplin Studios in Los Angeles, with additional recording in Chicago, according to Just Jared.
The soundtrack
Per Just Jared, the album brings together 29 artists with new, original songs. It arrives Nov. 13, a week before the film opens in theaters on Nov. 20, according to Deadline.
"Black Stars" follows Noah Kahan's "Draw You Out," the first single announced from the album, Deadline reports. Deadline also says Lizzy McAlpine, Kacey Musgraves and Hozier are suspected to be involved, but that is unconfirmed.
