Two appeals dropped over a blocked PSLF employer rule: what is and isn't known

The Education Department dropped two appeals over a blocked PSLF employer rule. Here is what CashIn Credit reports, what it leaves unanswered, and where to look for your own account.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness can matter to people who work for government or nonprofit employers. A legal fight over a rule affecting those employers took a quiet turn this week.

On Oct. 21, 2026, Justice Department lawyers filed joint stipulations to dismiss two appeals, CashIn Credit reports, citing thecollegeinvestor.com. One was in the D.C. Circuit. The other was in a First Circuit case brought by nonprofits. A stipulation is an agreement between the two sides in a case.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness, or PSLF, is the federal program that forgives remaining student loan balances for borrowers who work for qualifying government or nonprofit employers. According to CashIn Credit, the rule in question would have let the Education Department strip PSLF eligibility from employers it accused of illegal activity.

Courts blocked the rule. CashIn Credit reports that Benzinga described the filing in Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights v. McMahon. Democracy Forward, which announced the dismissal in a press release, said the case National Council of Nonprofits et al. v. McMahon stopped the rule. The excerpt CashIn Credit had cuts off before finishing Democracy Forward's description of it.

Borrowers relying on public service loan forgiveness can see what is confirmed about the dropped appeals and what remains unclear, and where to check next.
